The rules and regulations behind utilities can vary wildly in different cities, and that’s the last thing that you want to deal with when you’re in middle of moving. But if you’re looking to move to Jacksonville, FL, we’re here to help. Here’s everything Jacksonville movers say you need to know about getting your utilities hooked up.
Water
While water service in many cities is handled by the municipal government, that’s not the case in Jacksonville. There are a number of different water utility companies of varying sizes, and many of the companies that handle water utilities are also providers of other utility services. The biggest and most reliable around is JEA, and they’re also one of the largest electrical providers in the region. While you can schedule same day service by visiting an office, it’s suggested that you schedule through their online portal. You’ll be required to provide a photo ID and social security number in addition to the address where you need service.
Electric
If you’re looking for electrical service in Jacksonville, JEA is the way to go. You can get your power set up at the same time you register for water service. While there are other power companies in town, they tend to focus on commercial properties. For those living in neighboring Jacksonville Beach, you’ll want to get in touch with Beaches Energy Services. You can fill out their online application here. A week’s notice is preferable, but both companies should be able to provide same day service if you’re willing to stop by one of their offices before 3 PM.
Natural Gas
Teco Peoples Gas is the consolidated provider of natural gas utilities for both commercial and residential renters and property owners in Jacksonville, and getting your service hooked up at your house or apartment is similar to working with JEA. Start by entering your zip code here, and the system will guide you through the application process. Teco should be able to set up your service the next day, but it’s always a good idea to schedule your appointment with some time in advance just in case something goes wrong. Make sure that your appliances are wired for natural gas ahead of time, as many modern appliances rely on electrical rather than gas power.
Trash
Trash pickup services in Jacksonville are handled by a combination of public crews working for the municipal government and three different independent contractors. Southland Waste Services of Jacksonville, Advanced Disposal Services, and Waste Pro of Florida each have their own designated stretch of the city that they cover, and customers have no control over which contractor they use. The local crews handle a comparatively small portion that covers the downtown area. If you aren’t living downtown, you’ll want to check this map to figure out which company serves you. While your service should start immediately upon move in, you’ll need to get in touch with your provider directly to schedule special services or pay your bill.
Cable and Internet
There are four major cable TV providers and three major internet providers serving Jacksonville, but only AT&T and Comcast offer both in a single package. Pricing can vary widely depending on the type of services you’re looking for and seasonal specials, but you can compare your options here, learn about their plans, and find their contact information.
